Both Ashville squads were able to defeat the Locust Fork Hornets in area play last week.

The Lady Bulldogs were able to extend their season to 5-3 in the home game.

Locust Fork was ahead 10-7 at the close of the first, but Ashville got it together enough to edge the score to within striking range until a last second three set the halftime score at 21-15, Hornets. The Lady Bulldogs found their groove in the third as it closed out 33-30, Ashville. Though at times it looked like the Hornets may have been able to get back into the lead, Ashville kept ahead for most of the fourth until the last minute when fouls and free throws set the final 52-48 score.

Mara Mattison led the points with 14, she also had nine rebounds; Janice Tipton had 12 points; Kim Fuller, who snagged an impressive 15 boards that night, also had 14 points while Stormy Penland chipped in six.

After the girls’ game, the boys’ squad took no time in schooling Locust Fork in how it should be done as they racked up a 76-48 win at home.

Xavier Newton had 19 strong rebounds while putting up 17 points for the Bulldogs in that game; Barry Woods was the points leader with 19 with Alex Farmer rounding out the top three with 18 points while Courtney Williams had 13 points on the night.

Ashville’s next game is tonight at home against St. Clair County.
