Hello, Pell City! Congratulations to area citizens, especially area veterans, who came out in full force and let their voices be heard in support of a new hospital for St. Clair County! After years of discussions, debates, meetings, and negotiations, the dream of a new hospital for our county is now well on its way to a reality!

As happy as I was to hear of the new hospital, and in turn the Veterans Affairs Nursing Home that will be built nearby, I was sad to learn that a business that has been in Pell City for decades will soon be closing its doors. Miller-Sutherlin Automotive is where I bought my first car over 25 years ago.... A brand new 1984 Chevrolet Cavalier!

Although I worked after school (coincidentally my first job, aside from babysitting or tutoring, was at St. Clair Regional Hospital), I obviously had financial help from my parents to buy that Cavalier, but boy do I remember the feeling of pride I had when I drove it off the lot at Miller-Sutherlin! And the last car I bought a few years ago, my beloved “Crimson Tide” colored mini-van, also came from Miller-Sutherlin. It’s a business that is going to be missed by many in Pell City.

Several classmates from the PCHS Class of 1984 recently got together to celebrate recent birthdays they’d had or were about to have.

Everyone met at Sammie’s Touch-N-Go Restaurant for dinner and birthday cake, and later some classmates went to JC’s for more fun and celebrating. Those attending the birthday bash were JoAnn and Greg Bain, Tim and Kelley Bennett and their son Jackson, Kim Johnson, Bernadette Beavers, Ginger Slovensky, Teresa Collins, Lisa Martin, Joni and Jamie Hawkins, Dennis Cotton, Alan Higginbotham, Cheryl Black, Megan Spann, Lori Fricker, Danny Holmes, Marie Barber and myself.

Congratulations to Pell City’s own Milea Hanner who recently won the title of 2010 St. Clair County Jr. Miss! Milea is the daughter of Bart and Staci Hanner and is a student at Victory Christian School in Pell City. She will now go on to represent the county at Alabama’s Jr. Miss, which will be held January 15-16, 2010 in Montgomery - Good Luck, Milea!

A retirement party was held last week for Lewis Kirksey who was a bus driver and shop foreman in the Pell City School System for 40 years. Mr. Kirksey was honored by Dr. Bobby Hathcock and others at the party held at the Pell City Civic Center.

Happy Birthday this week to Kristen Whisman, Candy Cosby, Chase Lee, Glenda Collier, Margie Smith, JoAnn Bain, Leann Smith, Buddy Bowman, and John Simpson. Happy Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Corder and James and Sue Erwin.

Happy Anniversary wishes also go out to Ernest and Alice White who celebrated 55 years of marriage earlier this week! Ernest was a long-time employee at the Post Office in Pell City, and Alice is a former daycare operator. We hope they, and our other anniversary couples, celebrate many more years of wedded bliss!
