The Leeds Green Wave traveled across the bridge to Bill Morris Stadium and left with a big 55-20 win over the Moody Blue Devils!!!
It’s been nine years since these two rivals Leeds and Moody last played. The two schools, coming into last Friday night had only played twelve times, with Leeds holding an 11 - 1 record against the Blue Devils.
Things got off to a rough for the Blue Devils, who where coming off of a two week quarantine due to Covid - 19. On the very first play of the game the Green Wave get a safety after the football was snapped over the quarterbacks head. Ten seconds in Leeds led 2 - 0. After the free kick, drove 52 yards and scored from 5 yards out thanks to Demetrius Overtons run. The extra point was good and Leeds was now up 9 - 0.
On the Blue Devils next possession, the Green Wave defense stopped them in three plays forcing a punt. Jamal Jordan breaks through the Moody protection to block the punt and Leeds got the score. With the extra point Leeds was now up 16 - 0. The Green Wave defense once again held the Moody offense to three and out forcing a punt. This time the snap was fumbled and the punt was blocked by the Green Wave special teams defense and recovered for another safety. Leeds now led 18 - 0. Leeds kicker Jackson Arthur closed out the first quarter for the Green Wave by converting a 38 yard field goal to put Leeds up 21 - 0.
Moody finally settled down in the second quarter and got themselves back in the game. Leeds stopped the Moody offenses first drive of the quarter, but a personal foul penalty against Leeds kept the drive alive. An eight yard run from Nick Burrell and a 3 yard completion by AJ Wallace to Kolby Seymore set Moody up first and 10 at the Leeds 29. Wallace dropped back and launched a beautiful pass to the endzone for Logan Cole, hitting him in stride for a 29 yard touchdown. The extra point was good and Moody had life down 21 - 7.
The Moody defense then stepped up and stopped the Green Waves next drive forcing a punt. The Blue Devils returned the favor on special teams with a punt block of their own. Pate Argo came flying around right end to block the Leeds punt and Parker Dodd scooped up the football and ran 24 yard for a score. The extra point was good and Moody was in business trailing 21 - 14.
Moody had all of the momentum, but the Green Wave defense forced another turnover and recovered the football and took over at their own 41 yard line. Leeds faced 4th and 1 at the Moody 20 yard line when Latta dropped back and threw a strike to Joshua Ruff in the back of the endzone for a touchdown. The extra point was good, and what momentum the Blue Devils had, the Green Wave quieted it down. Leeds led 28 - 14 at half time.
The two teams exchanged possessions to start the third quarter, and then the Green Wave scored on their next few possessions of the quarter to blow the game open. Overton scored from 9 yards out to give Leeds a 35 - 14 lead. The Green Wave defense came up with another score after the ball was snapped over the quarterback head and recovered for score makinging it 42 - 14. Latta scored from 5 yards out on the Green Waves next offensive possession to put Leeds up 49 - 14. The Leeds defense once again capitalized on a Blue Devil turnover this time with a pick 6 by Jacob Payne. He returned the interception 17 yards for the score. At the end of the third quarter Leeds had run away from the Blue Devils up 55 - 14.
Moody closed out the game with a touchdown strike from Wallace to Kolby Seymour for 29 yards. The two point try failed and made the final score 55 - 20 Green Wave.
Moody will make its first road trip of this season tomorrow night when they travel to Center Point to take on the Eagles in region play. Moody will finish out the month of September with a home make up game against John Carol next friday night at Bill Morris Stadium. Kickoff for tomorrow nights game at Center Point is at 7 pm.
