When an event is as big of a success as Ignite 08’, you bring it back. The free outdoor Christian concert, held at the Avondale track on Highway 78, drew thousands last year and will attempt to do the same, rain or shine, on August 15 from 1 p.m. until 9:30 p.m.

“A lot of church youth groups will be involved again this year,” Kerry Hollis, director of public/artist relations said. “We had around 11 different drama teams last year and we’ve even had churches from outside our area contact us about getting involved this year.”

The headliners for Ignite 09’ will be the Christian pop super group Big Daddy Weave, as well as nationally known speaker David Nasser. Nasser and his family escaped their homeland of Iran in 1979 amidst extreme turmoil and made their way to the United States. According to Ignite’s website,

www.ignitepellcity.com, “As one of the nation’s forefront speakers and visionaries, God has blessed David with the talent to reach the high tech, attention-lacking culture of Generation Next.

Involved in revivals, citywide rallies, camps and school assemblies, David speaks to over 700,000 people each year. The heart’s cry of D. Nasser Outreach is to effectively present the same relevant message, the Gospel of Christ, using fresh, innovative methods and resources.”

Big Daddy Weave was nominated for the Dove Award’s “New Artist of the Year” in 2002 and have sold more than 350,000 records and have had four top five hits in Christian Radio, such as “Fields of Grace” and the number one song of contemporary Christian radio in 2005, “Worthy of My Praise.”

First Baptist Church Pell City is the primary sponsor of the concert along with other churches, businesses and individuals. However, Ignite is still looking for sponsors at any level to help with expenses. Items needed include: port-o-potties, tents, fence barriers, ant poison, bottled water, hot dog buns, trash services, ice, etc.

Not only is the concert free, food and drinks will also be available at no cost. Ignite director JJ DuBose said they are expecting no less than 6,000 in attendance.

Ignite’s three main purposes are listed as, “to glorify God and his Son, Jesus Christ, to host an evangelistic outreach that will attract seekers and non-believers and provide a venue to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to facilitate the fellowship of Christians from all over the city and county and to bring them together into one point of focused worship of our Creator and Savior.”

Hollis said they were lucky to get Big Daddy Weave for Ignite ’09 and hopes the event continues to gather momentum. “We plan on seeing this thing get really huge over next few years,” Hollis said.
