The cold weather has brought us some new words from the Global Warming Gang.  The new buzzword to explain our cold weather is “Polar Vortex.”  I have been very amused watching the talking heads on the news trying to explain what a “Polar Vortex” is and does to our weather.  If this whole system can freeze our water pipes, make our cars not run, why are we worried about Global Warming?

The last few weeks have been one of amusement for me as we watched a “Scientific” exploration of the Antarctic get trapped in the ice and the ships that were sent to rescue them also were trapped in the summer ice of the Antarctic.  It was then the fun really started.  Could someone explain to me how greenhouse gases and planetary warming explain getting trapped in the ice?  I am just a country boy at heart, and as they say in the country, “That dog don’t hunt.”

I was even more amused to find out that two of the scientific party were journalists employed by a liberal newspaper that is noted for pushing CO2/carbon credits articles and follows the “We’re going to drown when all the ice melts mantra.”  Speaking of ice, for a while it was everywhere and there are three ships stuck in the summer Antarctic ice.

I appreciate having someone who knows explain things to me.  I am very interested in understanding why it very suddenly got cold.  Not just cold but colder than it had been for 20 years.  That Polar Vortex has been around for sometime.  It was first discovered in 1952 and normally just hangs around the North Pole.  One big winter storm that just goes nowhere and does not cause any trouble.  It hasn’t caused much trouble that we knew about, so why did it decide to drop in and freeze plants, water lines and, keep the kids out of school.  Well, there was an event that happened a week or so before the “Polar Vortex” came to visit that set up the sudden change in the weather.

There is a weather event called a “Sudden Stratospheric Warming” (SSW) that occurs directly over the Polar Vortex.  I knew it, they would be telling us it was some kind of warming.  Well, the SSW has nothing to do with CO2 or anything man made.  The phenomenon now known as SSW was first noted in 1979.  For some reason the very upper part of our atmosphere suddenly warms up and pushes the cold air beneath it, the cold air in the PolarVortex, out of the way.  It pushed all that cold air South into the US and into the Russia.

The Polar Vortex is not new; we are just starting to pay attention to it.  When I was growing up in Kentucky we just called bad weather, bad weather.   We hopped the bad weather would freeze our pond at least 3 inches thick so we could ice skate.  No one would tell us to stay in to avoid frostbite, and I don’t know anyone that ever suffered from frostbite.  If we had known about the “Polar Vortex” we would have asked Santa to bring us one for January so that we would could stay out of school, ice skate and play in the snow.

Extreme weather?  Winter cold caused by warming the climate?  Ships frozen in the summer ice?  We have had some very cold winters, and we appear to be moving toward a weather pattern similar to the 40s and 50s, when it was really cold.

Global Warming?  Not this winter.  Maybe we can get some of the “Globull” Warming in time for spring.
