Decosaic- The confluence of traditional decoupage and mosaic in the process of creating art—Pamela Vaughn, circa 2008

Mixed media artist, Pamela Vaughn, coined the term decosaic, and this mosaic artist from Huntsville, Alabama uses this medium to create original pieces of work that are fresh, creative, fun. Ms. Vaughn will be speaking and sharing her work at the Pell City Library on Sunday, June 14th at 2:00 p.m. in connection with the library’s kickoff of the library’s adult summer reading program. The theme of this year’s program is “Be Creative @ the Library” and that is something that this artist has mastered.

Pamela Vaughn graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1989 with a degree in Advertising and Public Relations. She works as a software analyst for Steeple Technologies in Huntsville, but her passion is art and her favorite work is in mixed media mosaics. While searching in her studio for something different to give her mosaics a more unique persona, she came across some old maps. By experimenting with these maps, working with a decoupage medium, and stained glass, she created a base for large caricature-looking faces. She embellished these faces with genuine fashion accessories such as earrings, sunglasses, fur, and hair combs to bring life and a unique freshness to her work. She enjoyed repurposing these girly baubles with mostly broken, sea, or stained glass to bring to life a host of characters. Mahria, Zoe, and Groovylocks are just a few of her creations, each with her own distinctive ethnic and fashion flair. So far, Pamela has focused her work on female characters, but she will soon release a complete cast of male suitors to accompany her dames on the walls of Big Head Galleries, the downstairs entrance to her studio space.

Come by the Pell City Library on Sunday, June 14th at 2:00 to meet Pamela Vaughn and experience her unique and creative decosaic art. She will speak and demonstrate her work. This program will be interesting and fun, and is free and open to the public. While there, don’t forget to sign up the adult summer reading program, and the chance to win prizes while enjoying your summer reading selections. Fantastic prizes are planned for the lucky winners, so be sure you get in on the fun. Registration will begin on Sunday and reading will begin then and continue throughout the month of July.
