On Friday, Feb. 22, the City of Leeds will hold amnesty court beginning at 9 a.m.
Amnesty Court gives defendants who have a Failure to Appear warrant a second chance to pay their fines. Leeds Court Magistrate Laura Roberts encourages defendants to take advantage of the opportunity.
“It’s not just an opportunity for us to help them. It’s a big deal for them that can really help them,” Roberts said.
Defendants must a pay a $25 recall fee on court day.
“Their fines can be paid on that day or they can request to be put on probation and elect to make payments,” Roberts said. “There is a possibility the judge may choose to reduce or change the fine amount.”
Defendants are required to call and request to be put on the docket for amnesty court. Requests must be made by 5 p.m., Feb. 21 by calling the court magistrate office at 699-0913.
“If you don’t call and ask to be put on the docket, we can’t recall warrants. I cannot stress that enough,” Roberts said. “Please call us just to see if you have any warrants and we will look that up for you.’
