Springville defeated by Eufaula at state
Springville —
Senior Savanna Hennings pitched 28 strikeouts in four games during the Class 5A state tournament, even though the fourth-ranked Springville Lady Tigers (41-21) came up short in their bid for a state championship.
Springville was eliminated by Eufaula, a team it had defeated in the tournament’s opening game, 2-1. Miss Hennings had 11 strikeouts, and Taylor Earley hit a two-RBI double in the fifth inning to give the Lady Tigers the go-ahead run.
Athens, the eventual state champion, handed Springville its first loss, 4-1, in the following round. Kristen Gipson was 2-3 with two singles, and Miss Hennings threw seven strikeouts.
The Lady Tigers rebounded in the following game, eliminating Moody from the tournament, 2-1 in nine innings. Danyelle Martin led off the ninth inning with a single, stole second, and scored on two Moody errors for the go-ahead run. Ashley Wise had done the same in the top of the fifth, leading off the inning with a single, advancing to second on a hit, and scoring on an error. Miss Henning had five strikeouts.
Springville’s rematch with Eufaula, who was later eliminated from the tournament by Mortimer-Jordan, was a 4-1 decision in which Eufaula took advantage of four errors and scored four unearned runs.
The Lady Tigers’ lone run was a solo home run by Miss Gipson in the seventh inning. Miss Hennings had five strikeouts and allowed four hits.
