Pell City —
Established in 1976, Habitat for Humanity (HFH) continues, “seeking to put God’s love into action by bringing people together to build homes, communities and hope.”
Habitat’s local Pell City chapter presented the Moss family with the keys to their new home this past Saturday as HFH volunteers, Pell City Mayor Bill Hereford, Pell City Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Lynn Batemon, District Court Judge Alan Furr and other supporters celebrated the Moss’s house dedication.
Marking the tenth house the Pell City HFH has completed, Don and Myrtis Moss will soon make their move into a new three bedrooms, two bathrooms home.
Arriving in a 153-foot truck from Tennessee, Pell City HFH President David Clark and other officers placed a communitywide call throughout the area for volunteers.
“We needed 20 people to unload and thanks to Jeff Smith with Coosa Cable, 52 people showed up. The truck was unloaded in three hours,” said Roy Dye HFH Builder/Financial Representative.
With the help of Panthers’ Football Coach David Shores and members of the Pell City High School football team, as well as numerous neighboring volunteers, the Moss’s home was completed in eight months.
“It’s an honor for us to come out and do something for others. We’re glad to be a part of this house,” said Shores.
“The house came to us on a Friday, by Wednesday the walls were up. People in Pell City have been really good to come out and help us,” said Dye.
Pleased to personally know the Moss family, Hereford said, “Myrtis Moss is the captain of the Pell City jail. It’s not a job to Myrtis, it’s her ministry. This family isn’t just getting a new house, this is in appreciation to them.”
After meeting the requirements such as proving steady income, verifying legal residency and sustaining a savings account over a designated period of time, potential Habitat homeowners are then required to invest sweat-equity hours in building his/her home, attending homeowner education classes, making an affordable down payment and submitting timely mortgage payments.
“Once the family qualifies, then the information is taken before our board and put to a vote,” said Janice Stella, a representative from the Pell City HFH Selection Committee.
Honored to have Habitat on their side, the Moss family is achieving the American dream of home ownership.
