Governor Bob Riley awards $119,047 to assist St. Clair domestic violence, child abuse victims
Pell City — Victims of domestic violence and child abuse in north-central Alabama will continue to have access to free, professional assistance thanks in part to grants totaling $723,661 awarded by Gov. Bob Riley.
Riley awarded the grants, including two economic stimulus grants, to support the work of nine nonprofit organizations assisting victims in 10 counties.
“The services these organizations provide are an important part of the recovery process,” Riley said. “Many of these organizations depend heavily upon individual contributions, so I urge area residents to be generous in their support.”
The organizations receiving grants from this area are:
* YWCA of Birmingham – Two grants totaling $83,825 to provide domestic violence victims in Blount, Jefferson and St. Clair counties with a secure, confidential place to stay for up to 30 days as well as counseling and support groups. The award includes a $20,000 stimulus grant to help the YWCA hire staff for its St. Clair Housing Program, which assists victims in St. Clair County to find safe long-term housing after their stay at the shelter.
* St. Clair Children’s Advocacy Center – $35,222 for aid to child abuse victims in St. Clair County. The center interviews young victims in a child-friendly, non-threatening environment. Victims are required to provide the details of their abuse only one time, instead of recounting it several times to many different agencies. Once interviewed, victims can receive therapy through the center if their parents cannot afford it on their own.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grants from funds made available to the state by the U.S. Department of Justice. A portion of the funding was made available by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
