USAF officer’s body recovered 26 days after earthquake
Pell City — The body of U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Ken Bourland was found Sunday in Haiti and was flown back to Dover Air Force base in Delaware.
His whereabouts were unknown since the magnitude 7 earthquake struck the island nation a month ago.
On January 12, Bourland got off the plane in Haiti and headed to the Hotel Montana, which was to serve as his home while he and four others trained for disaster preparedness on the island. Lt. Col. Bourland was among five Air Force members in Haiti on assignment.
Just before the earthquake, the 37-year-old sent his wife, Peggy, an email telling her he had arrived in the country.
“This was the last contact we had with him,” a statement issued by his wife after the earthquake struck said.
Lt. Col. Bourland’s parents, Dennis and Adrienne Bourland of Cook Springs, attend New Hope Baptist Church in Eden.
His family plans to bury Bourland at the Alabama National Cemetery at the American Village in Montevallo. As of press time, there was no information available as to what church would perform the burial service or when that service would take place.
Lt. Col. Bourland was on active military duty for 15 years and served a tour in Iraq in 2004. He and his wife have three sons.
