Brenda Roberts thanked for 25 years of service

Springville — Brenda Roberts has seen a lot after her 25 years of dedicated service to the City of Springville.

On Sunday those who worked along side the city clerk and who care about her held a tea in celebration of her years on the job and to wish her well as she retired this week.

“This is one of the most well respected and loved individuals in St. Clair County,” Springville mayor Butch Isley told those gathered at the Springville VFW Hall, which was packed with well-wishers. “It’s not just what she does or the way she is, it is for who she is that stands out about her. When she leaves I know that she’ll still be honored, loved and missed by all of us. You don’t replace somebody like that. We may hire someone in that position, but she can’t be replaced. ”

Most everyone in attendance greeted Roberts with a hug, a testament to the individual care she showed to everyone she came in contact with on the job.

“Y’all will never know what this means to me,” Roberts said told those gathered Sunday. “This touches my heart with all the love and support you’ve shown me. It’s unbelievable.”

She told her fellow clerks, “I’m sorry to leave y’all, but I’m gonna come visit you from time to time and we’ll have lunch.

“Springville’s been good to me. I’ve shared a lot of fun and sad times with everyone here. I thank each and every one of you for being a part of my life over the past 25 years... Words cannot express how I feel. I’m just so overwhelmed by the love and support that I’ve received from my family and friends and co-workers”

Judy Stirling, who worked with Roberts when she first came on board with the city, said, “When I took her job as water clerk, we had a lot of fun... You’ll never find a more honest person or committed person or one with more love in her heart.”

Longtime councilman Wayne Tucker praised Roberts’ ability to keep the council on course during the past 25 years. “One of the things I think about Brenda is that I know she must’ve had bad days, but I never saw her show it. You can always count on her to be a friend and if you ever needed someone to straiten us out at a council meeting, she was always the one. She knew the rules and regulations. There were many times when we would be at council meetings and there were six or seven of us who probably didn’t know what we were doing, but she always did.”

Her fellow clerks from the north end of the county were all smiles and wished Roberts the best as she retires.

Odenville clerk Pricilla Newton, who attended clerk’s school with Roberts said that getting together for lunch with all the other clerks from north St. Clair County “was always a hoot.”

Steele’s Pat Coffee, who also joined Roberts at clerk school and often for lunch said, “She’s always been a true friend and if you ever had problems with anything, she’d always be there for you.”

Former police chief Chris Isbell, who served the city for 14 years before retiring, joked that he hopes that Roberts doesn’t enter politics in order to keep busy after retiring. “Brenda was a good learner. She came to work at City Hall to be taught and she overachieved that and was teaching others over her career. All of us look forward to retirement... now she’s got to figure out what to do tomorrow and she can’t use grandkids as an excuse,” he said laughing. “She’ll probably miss it. She’ll have all the feelings of retiring with wondering if she did something right and things like that. But she’ll know she did and she’ll pat herself on the back and move right along.”
